[ConstructionOnline™ ](https://us.constructiononline.com/financials-overview)has introduced new Percent Margin Markup options for *Estimate Subcategories* and *Line Items*, expanding the flexibility and precision of cost calculations within [OnCost Estimating](https://us.constructiononline.com/construction-estimating-software). 

Designed to give construction teams greater control over how margins are calculated, this update allows users to apply Percent Margin directly on individual line items and subcategories in the estimate table. This functionality allows estimators to tailor margin calculations to specific costs or project conditions.

Teams can also standardize the application of Percent Margin across line items by configuring the estimate's *Item Defaults* within Estimate Settings. This ensures consistency in how margins are applied across projects, helping to maintain reliable pricing structures and reducing the risk of discrepancies in estimating workflows. 

Unlike traditional markup methods that apply a percentage increase or flat dollar amount to cost, Percent Margin calculates markup based on the desired profit margin—empowering builders to proactively plan for profit and stay consistently aligned with financial goals. To support this, [ConstructionOnline ](https://us.constructiononline.com/financials-overview)automatically applies the appropriate formula based on each project’s tax and markup settings, ensuring accurate results across a variety of financial scenarios. 

Supported calculation methods include:

- Tax then Markup
- Markup then Tax
- Tax and Markup calculated separately

In each case, the Percent Margin Markup dynamically adjusts to preserve the intended margin, providing a more dependable and controlled approach to pricing and profit management.
